I once read that every 11 years our bodies are made completely new, slowly transforming as old cells die & new ones take their place... may it also be with my soul: continually sloughing off all that is passing away, and being transformed into the newness of life...

City Living

So, I honestly don't know why anyone in their right mind would live in a City by choice. The polution, the expense, the inefficiency! I'm not going to sugar coat it here, folks so if you're looking for a cheer-me-upper, you've come to the wrong place... Since arriving in Vancouver, I've had my car backed into, my insurance hiked up, been charged for an aircare check and spent a good week dealing with the ICBC claim. I've had a roomate leave without paying rent and without giving notice. To add insult to injury, I've had one speeding ticket (the one place you can actually drive in the city!), and one parking ticket (after paying the 3$ to park, and then not getting back in time.) Nathan's scooter has been knocked down once by someone backing into it, and once had it hit at full speed- it skidded down the street. If he had been anywhere near it, he probably would be dead, or at least severely maimed. His two ICBC claims had to go through at the same time, making for a rather confusing situation that is long from sorted. He will probably take his scooter in this week. Nathan's locker was broken into at school and his wallet, keys, school bag with all his school stuff, and cell phone were all stolen. Which was too bad for the guy who broke into his apartment just a couple days later, because he had almost nothing of value left there to steal! Most recently Nathan, a friend of ours, and myself were acosted by a madman (likely cracked out) on a bike, who responded to our quiet grumbling after he nearly knocked our friend down at full speed down the middle of the sidewalk with a violent and earnest offer to pound our heads into the road if we continued talking about him 'that way.' Thankfully we escaped after a few minutes of abuse with only slightly moist faces from his spittle and slightly moist trousers from the fear he managed to produce in us. Just another fine day in Vancouver, folks! Most beautiful city on earth. Then, as you may of heard, we are now enjoying the much anticipated water crisis that has resulted in the over logging of areas directly above our water supply- the bank slid into the water and produced such a volume of silt in the water that the filter is entirely insufficient to, well, filter, and the many bacteria that inhabit the woodland floor are having their hayday. Add to that the Portmann Bridge expansion soon to bring us more and more congestion from the south, and the great cause of the Olympics, which is sucking every service dollar out of every resource... this in the face of a housing crisis like none since the depression, the poorest per capita postal code in Canada living literally under the feet of the richest in Canada... and YES! Let's all move to Vancouver. What a modern, lovely city. The city of glass, indeed. You can see right through it when you get close enough, and it's ability to support life, as well as it's crystal image, are about as fragile.

ASH, I was just perusing through flight options for your WEDDING!!! I would love to have a phone date but I too am without a phone card. I gotta pick one of those babies up!
I sense a little frustration in your post but I would just like to point out that moist and spittle are two of my favorite words!! Here is a recipe for you to cheer up: call me on the telephone OR skip in the rain with bright colored galoshes repeating the word SPITTLE in different voices. (It's a guarantee to bringing on giggles)
Love you friend! Talk to you soon!

Wow, Ash. You sound very adamant about the horribleness of Vancouver... you even posted it twice! I'm really sorry to hear about everything that has happened. Soon it will be Christmas, in which case you probably get to spend some time at home, and then....... MORE FUN!!!! And you will get to see your friends and family, and become married!!!! So, there are things to look forward to, despite the ugliness of the situation right now. And Nathan is there with you right now, and most importantly, God is still there. Perhaps there is something to be thankful for? I'll let you be unhappy with the yuckiness for a little bit, but there's no excuse to be bitter for long! :o) Hope things look up a little soon....
I love you!

Hehe, well Ash, I must say, misery does love company does it not? We would certainly make good company at the moment I think. Vancouver was awarded best city on Earth recently by the Economist. Your description of the world's 'number one' city does not give me great cause for hope regarding London!

Much better to live in the country, no doubt. You and Nathan move to Comox and Beth and I will move to Chemainus - we'll meet for coffees in Nanaimo and go for bike rides.

Your worst week takes the cake, no contest. It kind of reminds me of the Steve Martin movie L.A. Story. If you haven't seen it you might really like it. It may seem to real though.

I sincerely hope your lot improves, and have much empathy for your situation.

Wow Ashley... you're sure making me miss the West coast right now ;) I can't wait to come home for Christmas (note the sarcasm). I agree with you though, I am glad my parents don't live in Vancouver! Hope you get some sunshine to improve your impression of the city soon! It can be very beautiful on a nice sunny day (too bad those don't happen more often!)

My Ashley!

Hey there girl! I'm sorry to hear that things have been so rough. My first year of living up here in the city after being in the country all my life, nearly brought me to tears almost everyday. I have stories of living here that are much like the ones you've been through. I'll be keeping you and Nathan in my prayers. You know where to find me if you need anyone to talk to EVER. :) My arms and heart is always open to the two of you!

As for the wedding, I regret to inform you that I won't be able to attend. :( I've tried my hardest...and not all hope is lost yet, but I'm still fighting tooth and nail to be able to make it! LOL Between my work place and arguing with airlines, I've got my work cut out for me. But be assured that if I don't get there for the wedding, I'll be on your doorstep some other time. Haha And your present from me, will be there, regardless of whether I am or not!

Anyway, I don't have anymore more time to write, as I have to run. But take care and know that this crazy kid loves you a lot! I wish you and Nathan all the best if I don't get a chance to talk to you before the wedding!

Much love,
Kristy :)

Oh my golly goodness! When it rains it pours, eh? I never had such terrible experiences while living in Edmonton. It's a much different city than Vancouver though. The worst we ever got was when Julian's car would be broken into every now and then...and once they even left a discman behind!

Hopefully the wedding planning is going more smoothly than your everyday life. If you ever need to chat, just let me know...use skype!!! it's free until the new year to call landlines.

I have a long weekend starting tomorrow and I actually don't have anything more than lesson planning to do (not counting re-organizing our disaster of a house) so I will try to call you. Although I hear that you don't get great reception in your house...I'll try anyway.

Hope to talk to you soon! I love you, friend...and that Nathan guy too!

I will see you in less than 60 hours!!!! ahhh the excitment and anticipation of being home is finally building, and i just can't wait. this, our last full day in the beautiful country of Scotland is going to be the longest yet, im afraid.
out of all daily trials and tribulations, I concur with you that dealing with ICBC can often be the worst. Why people choose the city is also beyond me, let me tell you! I have my own little share of stories after touring the worlds "greatest and grandest cities" over the past few months. Let's just thank our God that there are still places out there like our lovely Comox Valley and Ucluelet.
Anyway soon I will be there..then we can talk about all of this (and much more;) in person and for real - i cant wait!!
miss you.. keep looking up, He's still there:)

Wow, that is all really unfortunate. I hope you're not too near East Hastings, I was afraid to park their once. But in all honesty, it is a sad story but that is the way the world is turning. Society, at least our society, is going down. It's a sad story, but at the same time, if all we do is have a bad attitude about it, we aren't making the situation any better. Hopefully you are able to see the good in all your situations. Peace be with you.

Hello there...

Is it permissable to miss a married woman? To think she's still just as great as ever? I would love to hear what you're going through right now. I hope you're doing well, Ash.

Well My dearest Ashley-Bear!

It's been a VERY long time since I've made any comments on here for you. Just wanted you to know that I still love you dearly and that you and Nathan have been in my prayers for quiet sometime. I dunno why, but you two have been on my heart to pray for, for quite sometime now.

I hope all is going well over there with you, and I'm looking forward to hearing more about what's going on with your life. (Both the married life, and the school...and other parts...yes I wanna know it all!!!!!)

That's about all I have to say over here for now.

Much loves and hugs,
Kristy :)
